Oceana becomes Pryzm tonight after a £1 million refurbishment.

The Canons Road nightclub is the first Oceana in the UK to be rebranded by its owners Luminar.

“Pryzm is a brand-new modern, exclusive and stylish nightclub concept in Bristol,” gushes the launch night invitation.

“A modern day colloseum (sic) consisting of 3 new club arenas, a luxurious VIP suite and the ultimate chic bar experience.

“Pryzm will offer an amazing combination of excitement, atmosphere, elegance and opulence alongside world class entertainment and service standards.”

Okay, fair enough, here's my feedback; it's a good idea, I'd be happy if it worked. The beer was high quality; the service was friendly (and well turned out); and I don't have a problem with the location... We just felt like there was something fundamental lacking from the atmosphere. It's way too bright, you need an element of dinge, beer halls are supposed to be a bit rustic, but you have disco lights going full blast and all the lights turned on. Sitting there next to those massive windows, with all the lights blazing, it feels like you're an exhibit in some weird hyper-real showroom, get some blinds dude. We didn't see an oompah band, that would've probably helped. There was some guy with an accordion but come on, it was Friday night, if you're gonna ever have a proper band, surely that was the time. If it was a pumping, rowdy, well lit, oompah laden, cleavage-fest... I might even be able to overcome paying £5.20 for a pint or Erdinger. How's that?

The location is indeed awful. Truly awful. Even something superb which the Bavarian Beerhouse is clearly not would struggle to survive here. It's one of those places where you look at a map and think - great! But you only think that if you have never before set foot in Bristol. I shall most definitely never be stepping foot in your establishment, not even to ogle at your top-heavy lovelies.

Thanks, I stand corrected. http://www.flickr.com/photos/brizzlebornandbred/7325876234/ Kind of reminds me a little of Liverpool's Royal Liver building. What a tragic decision to demolish it.
