Blogger Stacey Cavanagh asked one thousand Americans to name a British city other than London, with surprising results.
Liverpool topped the chart, followed by Manchester. Bristol was in fifth position, one place above Wales.
Here are the full results:
Liverpool (15% of respondents answered ‘Liverpool’)
Manchester (12%)
Leeds (4.7%)
Cambridge (3.7%)
Bristol (3.6%)
Wales (3.6%)
Oxford (3.0%)
Birmingham (2.4%)
Bath (2.3%)
Paris (1.9%)
Cavanagh used a promotional code from Google Consumer Surveys to carry out the test.
On her blog, she wrote: “Perhaps the biggest surprise of the top-10 (apart from the fact that 19 people thought Paris is in a British city and 36 people thought Wales is) is how few people answered ‘Birmingham.’
“Could it be the football influence of Liverpool and Manchester? 1% of respondents also said Chelsea.”
I grew up in the USA and Liverpool was either the first or second UK city I knew of. That had nothing to do with football; it was about the Beatles.
They think Wales is a city?! What!
Maybe they meant “Wells”? Nah probably not. Oh dear!
