Bristol has got some great road names. Unfortunately the best one, Gropecunt Lane, where ladies of the night used to gather, has long been deemed unacceptable and for more than 200 years it has been known as the slightly more politically correct Nelson Street.
We have previously written about There and Back Again Lane in Clifton. Johnny Ball Lane is another favourite road name of ours. Contrary to popular belief, this long alleyway that stretches from Upper Maudlin Street to Lewins Mead is not named after the former children’s television star and father of Zoe, but after a long-forgotten local resident.
Johnny Ball Lane can be seen from the back windows of Break n’ Take. Inside, this large cafe – the former Conrad at Jameson’s restaurant – is the definition of higgledy-piggledy, with small interconnecting areas joined by a few steps.
Two particularly popular areas are the conservatory extensions, with comfy sofas and the sun streaming through the large windows. As well as a view of Johnny Ball Lane, the conservatory I was perched in early one Thursday morning had black and white photographs of some of the world’s most stunning man-made creations including the Great Wall of China, the Colosseum in Rome and Peru’s Machu Picchu.
In an ideal location for BRI staff and visitors, Break n’ Take gets my vote for its wonderful cake selection, all made and baked on the premises, next to one of Bristol’s best-named thoroughfares.
