Bagel Boy

Bagels for breakfast, bagels for lunch and bagels for dinner.

With Bagel Boy now open in their first proper home on St Nicholas Street, you can get your boiled and baked dough ring fix whatever time of the day you want.

Wash it down in the morning with a coffee from Little & Long, a roasters from Kingswood, and as early as you dare, a beer from Lawrence Hill’s Arbor, who currently have two ales on tap, Artisan and Yakima Valley.

After starting life at the Elbow Rooms on Park Street, Bagel Boy then sprung up within Shambarber on Stokes Croft, where they are still based.

This, however, in what used to be the Tantric Jazz Cafe, is all theirs.

24 different bagels are on offer, costing between £3.50 and £6. I chose the Independent Boy (bacon, guacamole, cream cheese and salad), part of a £5 lunchtime meal deal with a packet of crisps and glass of lemonade, and it was a treat, with a thick rash of bacon and some zingy sauce.

The look of the new Bagel Boy is similar in feel to the Crofters Rights, with both the bar and the booths made from chipboard and plain walls, against which a couple of bikes can be expected to be leaned.

There is one long wooden table and sofas at the far end of a room that should become a popular place both by day and by night, with a selection of wines and also more beer including Freedom Organic Lager, as well as Bounders cider.

Bonnie and Clyde. Sonny and Cher. Little and Large. Bagels and beer. It’s a dream combination.
