Pub of the week: The Crofters Rights

The Crofters Rights on Stokes Croft looks like a cross between a barn and a chipboard factory.

Bristol’s latest craft beer bar has been open for a week but still looks mostly unfinished. Although perhaps that’s the idea.

What used to be The Croft has been stripped right back to its constituent parts, with a wooden ceiling, thick stone walls and a rickety metal spiral staircase down to the toilets.

There are decks in one room, and in another the most remarkable seating in Bristol – akin to clambering up the side of an Aztec pyramid.

So what about the beer? For this is an establishment from the people behind the Euston Tap and Holborn Whippet, two of London’s finest craft beer connoisseurs; as well as The Lanes closer to home, well-known for their own eclectic selection of beer.

Beer here is chalked up behind the bar, and rubbed out when it runs out.

From breweries near there is Bristol Beer Factory Acer, Wiper & True Amarillo and from Tiny Rebel just over the Bristol Channel in Newport, NP10 and Grand Regal.

A selection of ales from further away includes Magic Rock Juggler from Huddersfield, Marble Lagonda from Manchester, Harbour Antipodean Rye from Cornwall and Camden Gentlemen’s Wit from London.

And from further afield still there are currently two German beers, Weihenstephan Hefe and Konig Pilsner.

Among the ciders is Orchard Pig Crofters Rights. Made with chilli and ginger, the Crofters Rights is the only place where it will be served.
