The Arcade in Broadmead could become a centre for Bristol’s artisan traders, from hat makers to bakers.
Built in 1825, the Grade II-listed shopping arcade linking the Horsefair and Broadmead was only the second to be built in the UK, but in recent years it has fallen mostly into disuse.
Even Starbucks recently moved away from The Arcade, which now is home to a sorry collection of nail bars and milkshake shacks.
Milliner Ani Stafford-Townsend is hoping to lead the historic walkway’s renaissance by opening Bristol’s only hat shop.
“Bristol is a fantastic bubble of creativity and design, but there are very few outlets for it,” says Ani.
“I plan to open a boutique hat shop in Broadmead’s St James’ Arcade to help rectify this and support other crafts-persons in earning money from their skills.”
Ani’s plans for her own shop include on the ground floor, a selection of mostly one-off work from local and national artisan milliners.
Up a spiral staircase will be where Ani creates her own hats and hold workshops.
Ani is currently crowdfunding to finance her shop. To pledge your support, visit www.gofundme.com/MillinersGuild.
Yay! It’s a gorgeous building, can’t believe it’s been empty so long….
