Many pubs in Bristol have their walls covered with pump clips to show off their commitment to real ale. But actually, what is more important than the beers that were on tap once upon a time are those beers that are currently being served and you can come in today to drink.
In the Hillgrove in Kingsdown, there are both plentiful pump clips hidden behind hops on the walls, and also plenty of pump clips on the bar.
This is a Dawkins pub, so no surprise there from a brewery well known for both the quality of its own beers and the guest ales in its five-strong estate of pubs.
When I visited last week, Dawkins’ Bristol Best, Tapping the Admiral and Brass Knocker sat alongside half a dozen other ales such as Goffs White Knight and Cheddar Ales Gorge Best, my all-time favourite name of a beer and not a bad tipple either.
A chocolate cake on the bar was made from Otley Saison Obscura, another ale on tap, with better than average fare pub food here including steak and ale pie, and both beef and veggie lasagne.
Expect new Dawkins beers Slapstick Black and White to promote January’s Slapstick Festival coming soon to the Hillgrove, a pub where beer is no joke.
