Climbing the ss Great Britain mast

How about this for a view of Bristol you haven’t seen before?

ss Great Britain view from mast

Stepping into the shoes of a Victorian sailor, this is the view from the main mast of the ss Great Britain which will form part of a new visitor attraction aboard Brunel’s famous ship in the new year.

Participants will be strapped into a harness before ascending the rigging to a viewing platform 27 metres above the deck, then traversing out along the main yard, taking them nine metres out across the ship below.

“In everything we do we aim to take visitors back in time and show them what the conditions on board would have been like for passengers and crew alike,” said Rhian Tritton, director of conservation and education for the ss Great Britain Trust.

“It would have been opulence and luxury for the First Class passengers, but scary and pretty dangerous for the hard working crew.”

‘Go Aloft’ will open to the public in April 2014. For more information, visit www.ssgreatbritain.org/goaloft.

This looks totally fantastic and my boys would love to do it. Will there be age restrictions?
