Temporary forest needs Christmas trees

You may not even have bought your Christmas tree yet this year but for those who can already think about its life after Christmas, MAYK and the city council are inviting Bristol residents to donate their post-festive trees to Second Chance.

The art project will see the creation of a temporary forest on Waterfront Square, next to the Lloyds amphitheatre, at the beginning of January.

The forest will be constructed from Christmas trees and given new life as an installation by artists Michaela Klakurková and Jan Žaloudek under the curatorship of Marcela Straková.

All tree donors will be invited to have their photo taken with their tree before it is added to the forest.

Kate Yedigaroff and Matthew Austin of MAYK said: “We first came across Second Chance in Prague, where it has been running in the square outside the Czech National Theatre for a number of years.

“We knew immediately that this was a perfect project for Bristol.

“There is something both powerful and gentle about this uncluttered gesture to make something beautiful out of something that ordinarily gets discarded without care.”

Artists and organisers of Second Chance will be collecting trees at the site on January 4 and 5 from 10am to 6pm.

The project will be launched on Monday, January 6 with a performance by the appropriately named Czech band Please The Trees.
