My Bristol favourites: Mat North

Mat North is owner of Full Court Press on Broad Street, where coffee-making is as much a science as an art, and coffee is treated as a specialist ingredient. Only single origin coffee is rotated regularly on both espresso and filter, with any one coffee lasting between three to 10 days.

Full Court Press also has monthly takeovers by its roasters, giving them the chance to showcase unusual coffees and explore the impact of process, roast profile and variety on flavour. Next week, Clifton Coffee Company take on the last takeover of 2013.

Here are Mat’s top-five Bristol favourites:

The Lord Mayor’s Chapel
“To most people, the Lord Mayor’s Chapel is just that old building next to Fopp on College Green, but it’s one of the most interesting buildings in Bristol. A working church since the late 1200s and originally the chapel for St Mark’s Hospital, I find it far more interesting both architecturally and historically than the cathedral across the road.”

The view of the city from Redcatch Road, Knowle
“Bristol is, as you may have noticed, pretty hilly and has got more than its fair share of great views. I’ve lived south of the river since I’ve been in Bristol and this is the best view around. With Windmill Hill and Victoria Park in the foreground it stretches out to encompass all of the major landmarks in a huge panorama. Cracking.”

Bacon sarnies at Baristas Coffee Collective
“Some days you just need bacon and Baristas on Victoria Street serves the Best Bacon in The World. Fact. The owner, George, buys in whole sides from The Valley Smokehouse in Dundry and slices it himself,to what you’d think is a little too thick. But by some magic it works gloriously; so good in fact we had it at both of our weddings. It’s only available on Wednesday, Frifay and Saturday, but it’s worth the trip alone.”

Doors Open Day
“I like having a poke around buildings, both old and new. The annual Doors Open Day gives us the chance to explore places that we would otherwise never see. Big favourites of mine are the Redcliffe tunnels and the trip to the top of the Wills building on Park Street.”

The Barley Mow, The Dings
“The craft beer revolution is huge in Bristol at the moment and it would be really hard to choose a favourite place to have a quality beer. So instead I’ve gone for my favourite place stop off on the way home after a cycle round town. The Barley Mow is a great place, for food, beer and reading the paper.”
