Bottelino’s opens in Clifton

Bottelino’s has closed its restaurant in Bedminster and opened a new branch in a former furniture shop in Clifton.

Bottelino’s still has four restaurants in Britol and further afield, in Portishead, Weston-super-Mare and Swindon, but the last two years have also seen the closure of outposts in Emersons Green and Nailsea.

A bar, The Office, takes up most of the area of this new opening seen from Queen’s Road, with the restaurant at the far end.

Waiters and waitresses wear bow ties and waistcoats, and there is a mini grand piano in one corner of the bar. It all gives the impression of a classy establishment, one on which a lot of money has clearly been spent.

In the bar, tapas is available from £3.50 (with complimentary bread if three or more is purchased – rather stingy).

The first cocktails listed on the menu are champagne cocktails, a sign of the clientele they may be hoping to attract.

Food is typical Italian fare, with pasta and pizzas both from £8.95, and mains including steak (£21.95 for an 8oz chargrilled fillet) and burger (£9.95), with a full takeaway service available.

Bottelino’s nearest equivalent in Clifton is Browns, a popular hang-out for well-heeled Bristol University students, who could soon be frequenting here as well.

The closing of their Bedminster outpost and opening in Clifton, however, remains a mystery.

It’s an unusual move in a year which has seen Zazu’s opening a second site on North Street and The Burger Joint due to open its second restaurant there in the new year.

The end of East Street that used to host Bottelino’s has also seen the successful opening of Grounded, and the Rope Walk is due to reopen under new owners soon.

The one in Emersons Green is now “Botteginos” and I don’t think there’s anything different about it.

Having known the owners for about a decade ive come to the conclusion that they’re just not very nice people.

It’s just another unspectacular chain to go with the others in that area. Jamies, Pizza Express etc, I’m looking at you.
