A popular Bristol restaurant has undergone a curious change of name.
Rupsha in Clifton Village has been a favourite Indian restaurant for the two or so years it has been open, even making it to number one on Tripadvisor, where it currently sits in tenth place out of 918 (with Meluha on Park Street now claiming top spot).
But Rupsha is no more and in its place comes The Roopsha, an Anglicised version of a word that means beautiful.
The reason is due to a change of management and that the new spelling is better aligned to the pronunciation.
The Roopsha proclaims that is “a nouvelle cuisine of Indian and fusion”, and remains a cut above your standard curry house.
When I visited earlier this week with my daughter and her mother, we were treated like long lost friends. Our waiter even picked our two-and-a-half year-old up to put her in her high chair – a first.
With a delicate toddler palate to feed, we ordered the tried and tested chicken tikka masala and also a lamb badami.
Both arrived promptly and were excellent, only soured by me somehow smashing my wine glass with a spoon. Don’t ask how.
Blood was spilled but this highlighted once again the attentiveness of the staff, who fussed around us as if I had just broken my arm rather than made a tiny indentation on my palm.
Our meal ended with three complimentary cocktails and After Eights.
Rupsha may now be The Roopsha, but this is exactly the same restaurant as before which still remains one of Bristol’s best.
