Dozens of businesses in Bristol have failed inspections by the Food Standards Agency (FSA).
These seven have even failed to score a single point in their ratings:
- Costcutter, 26 Sandy Park Road, Brislington
- Domus Pizza, 183 Whiteladies Road, Clifton
- Kam Xing House, 17 Harrowdene Road, Knowle
- Lay Lee, 88 Hollway Road, Stockwood
- Lucky Inn, 16 Glyn Vale, Knowle
- New City Fish Bar, 378 Filton Avenue, Horfield
- Star Value, 15 Harrowdene Road, Knowle
Every business that serves food has to be inspected by the FSA, which monitors premises, the kinds of food made or prepared, how staff work, and a business’s food safety management system.
Anything less than a score of three out of five constitutes a fail. Businesses given ratings of 0 or 1 are those that need to make urgent or major improvements.
Businesses scoring just one out of five include Southmead Hospital catering firm AHM Catering, Atlas in Bedminster, The Bird Table in Westbury Park, Bristanbul on the Gloucester Road, Chandos Deli on Whiteladies Road, Farrell’s in Portishead, Flavalanche on Park Street, Hartcliffe Kebabs, Kim’s Kafe in St Anne’s, Patisserie Leila on Stokes Croft, Shirehampton Village Bakery, Sonni’s in St Werburgh’s and the Treble Chance in Southmead.
Businesses are not obliged to put their food ratings in their windows, although many that score well choose to do so and a recent audit by the FSA found that more businesses are choosing to share their results.

I find it bizarre that Chandos Deli failed the inspection. Is the Deli’s food safety not up to scratch or are the ratings not doing what they’re supposed to?
Orwell’s ‘Down and Out in Paris and London’ is a useful and salutory reminder that the most prestigious of establishments can be squalid behind the scenes. I know nothing about the Chandos Deli, but I sometimes used to have to work in the food prep areas on ferries, and can confidently say that some things just don’t change!
Interesting that Chandos have scored 5/5 in their current ratings at everywhere except their Whiteladies Road shop, which scored a 1. It’s a shame you can’t see the full reports online to know what they failed on.
On the other hand, it’d be too tempting to know what was going on behind the scenes at that restaurant where I really enjoyed the food recently, but have now found out they scored a 1 as well… Maybe I’d rather not know.
We would like to add that flavalanche was given a lower rating purely because we were missing some policies / procedures that the council require, not due to actual cleanliness or hygiene.
All the council recommendations were installed several weeks ago and we are expecting a re-rating in the coming weeks where we expect a high rating.
We would like to add that on their visit we were commended for the cleanliness of the store.
Many thanks
Flavalanche
The ratings are often misleading and focused on onerous procedures and red tape as opposed to actual hygiene and cleanliness.
I couldn’t agree more, this scheme is ,both subjective and divisive, wrecking businesses reputations,on the strength of a random 30 minute visit, where often, hygiene is excellent, but an awkward kitchen in an old building, results in a low score. Some places deserve what they get and we the public need protection. But this is authority bullying at its worst.Whatever happened to insightful journalism instead of this shock value stuff. These businesses are all open to trade,if they represented a risk they would be closed down surely.
I have been in Kam Xing and Star Value many many times and I just don’t believe this. Stop hating on Sanj. Freedom for Harrowdene.
For those that have a 5 we can now provide you with material to publicise this such as:
Posters
Menu stickers
Tent cards
Beer Mats
Vehicle Decals
Think it is wise to take these gradings with a pinch of salt, but even wiser to question the quality and hygiene of the food prepared by someone elses hands…
