It’s a sad state of affairs when an art sculpture has to be kept inside overnight for its own safety.
Poetry in Motion, the Gromit Unleashed sculpture designed by actress Joanna Lumley, has returned to the trail with a new tail.
But unlike before it was damaged, its plinth is now on wheels, chained outside Bristol Cathedral during the day to prevent it being stolen, and kept inside at night to prevent it being vandalised.
“It’s wonderful that Gromit is back doing his best to make children’s lives better,” Lumley said.
“To harm him was wrong, but that’s in the past. He is a top dog, with the heart of a lion and I love him to bits.”
Carosello outside the Spyglass was also damaged, restored and is now kept inside during the night.
During the Wow Gorillas trail in 2011, Timmy Mallet’s gorilla in the Mall gardens in Clifton Village was set alight.
A sculpture outside the RWA was destroyed by a drunken student in that same year and I Didn’t See You There by Anne Deeming, which last month saw art installed in areas including Victoria Street and Queen Square, has also been vandalised with many pieces missing.
Can Bristol be trusted with public art projects?
I’d be interested to see if public art in other cities fairs any worse/ better.
classic argument though, should you let the few rotten apples spoil things for the many good ones? such a shame there’s fucking selfish idiots out there, but that’s life eh?
don’t let the buggers grind you down
