The Barley Mow in the Dings is now Bristol Beer Factory’s flagship pub, refurbished and even better than ever, helping to lead the charge in Bristol’s new love affair with craft beer and real ale.
The 10 kegs behind the bar are a mystery until you look behind you to see their names chalked up on a board, with current picks including California’s Stone Brewing Co. Pale Ale, the 10 per cent Tempest Old Parochial and Summer Wine Mokko Milk Stout.
Then there is the selection on draft: Bristol Beer Factory Acer and Seven, Triple F Pressed Rat and Warthog, Sub W Zenith, A9, Roosters Rude Boy, Tempest Cresta Black and Alchemy Amarillo Burst.
You can certainly have a whole load of fun working your way through that lot.
Bristol is slowly becoming a hotbed for this kind of ale appreciation, with Beerd on St Michael’s Hill leading the charge, followed by BrewDog on Baldwin Street and soon the Croft on Stokes Croft opening as The Crofters Rights.
One can’t possibly drink beer without food, and the Barley Mow has that covered too with bar snacks including pork scratchings and sausage rolls, through to dinner and popular Sunday roasts.
For fans of old-fashioned pub entertainment, the bagatelle board remains in place, and there is also a pile of board games.
All of this eating, drinking and playing can be done inside, or outside in the refurbished beer garden. There are also regular events such as beer appreciation evenings, although in a pub such as the Barley Mow that’s a given.
