Review: Alt J, Bristol Academy

At the end of their sold out gig at the Academy, the four members of Alt J held their hands in the air to create a symbol that when Benedict Cumberbatch did it on the set of Sherlock recently almost sent the internet into melt down.

Such is the allure of Sherlock, but also such is the allure of Alt J, whose name is the Apple shortcut key for triangle, hence the hand gestures.

The band, who met while at Leeds University and later moved to Cambridge, are the current holders of the Mercury Music prize.

They play music that is at times otherwordly, befitting the backdrop of blue tree roots and lights that look like something out of Day of the Triffids.

Maracas, glockenspiel and Bollywood all form part of the musical element, which also featured a misjudged cover of A Real Hero by College and Electric Youth from the Drive soundtrack that would have been better off remaining on the tour bus where it was probably conceived.

But that was the only bum note of proceedings as songs such as Tesselate, Matilda and Breezeblocks showed why Alt J are currently one of the best bands around.

“Ever since we started touring we’ve loved to play in Bristol. Tonight is no different so thank you,” said Gus Unger-Hamilton from behind the keyboards and laptop towards the end of the gig.

Triangles have never before been so sexy.
