Glen’s Kitchen

In Bristol city centre, new Caribbean restaurant Turtle Bay is getting all the attention and rightly also getting plaudits for the quality of its food.

At its official launch party last week, all the money raised went to the Malcolm X Centre in St Paul’s – an organisation which needs all the financial support it can get.

Tucked in one corner of the Malcolm X car park is a Caribbean restaurant as far removed from Turtle Bay as it is possible to get.

Glen’s Kitchen serves its food out a small hatch from Monday to Saturday. Three boards show opening times of 8am, 9am and 10am. But who cares?

Its simple menu when I visited yesterday after a visit to the nearby Ujima Radio studios saw Caribbean favourites including jerk chicken and curried goat, alongside halal options as well as vegetarian and pasta dishes.

My jerk chicken served with rice and peas cost £5, and could have fed me for two days. Its seasoning was not as hot as I was expecting, but in my book that is preferable.

There are a couple of plastic tables, around which one group of friends were having an animated discussion. But that’s about it.

There is no £900,000 spend here like Turtle Bay; just simple honest Caribbean food, with an authenticity hard to beat.
