The UK’s first hydrogen fuel-celled boat took on board paying passengers for the first time this weekend. Commissioned for Bristol City Council’s Green Capital initiative, Hydrogenesis took passengers on 45-minute trips between the Arnolfini and the ss Great Britain.
It is the start of a six-month trial on the Floating Harbour for the 11m-long, 12-seat vessel, which cost £225,000 to build and produces no emissions.
Beset by technical problems, the long-term aim of the project is to make the boat financially viable and to produce its own hydrogen.
