Zazu’s Kitchen has had an unusual journey to where it is today, and one that has taken in a variety of Bristol postcodes. Originally opened on Jamaica Street, it was empty for a while before being bought by Toby Bywater, who promptly got fed up of Stokes Croft and moved lock-stock to Clifton Village. Then he got fed up with Clifton and moved lock-stock to the Gloucester Road.

Zazu's Kitchen North Street inside

The newest Zazu’s Kitchen is on North Street in Southville, where The Terrace used to be. The difference now is that the Bishopston restaurant remains in place, with head chef Chris Gumbleton (ex-Robin Hood’s Retreat and Lido) overseeing both premises.

Gumbleton has added a deli-style bar selection, alongside a la carte restaurant and café menus. The pick of this month’s dinner options are sherry braised chickpeas with mussels, cockles and chorizo (£13.95), and slow cooked belly of pork, Toulouse sausage and white bean puree (£14.95).

Zazu’s Kitchen is an all-day offering, with early options including coffee from Bristol roasters Extract Coffee and homemade cakes.

When it’s time to move onto the stronger stuff, draughts currently include Butty Bach from the Wye Valley Brewery and Westons Mortimers Orchard cider.
