If you stroll past College Green near the Marriott Hotel at around 12.30pm on a weekday, you will spy an unusual sight: a queue to nowhere. All is eventually revealed as a chrome cart is wheeled into view from the direction of the centre. The unfurling of a yellow and red umbrella officially heralds the arrival of Meat & Bread, officially Bristol’s best street food.
But what of the competition? Here is a top-five of Bristol’s best street food:
1) Meat & Bread
Offering up the biggest sandwiches you will ever see for just £5 or less. Offerings include Jamaican curry beef; pulled pork with coleslaw, pickles and Russian dressing; and the infamous Notorious PIG. Deliveries have recently started, with a minimum of five sandwiches, within the city centre for those unable to queue.

2) Falafel King
So good that they have now opened a permanent outfit on Cotham Hill, that mecca of foodie roads in Bristol. A late night city centre snack that is healthy and won’t leave you wallowing in grease.

3) Vee Double Moo
Chocolate con churros are the latest addition to Vee Double Moo up at the top of Brandon Hill, adding to owner Bridget Pilkington’s soft ice cream with organic cones and homemade sauces, cupcakes, cookies, and tea and coffee.

4) Cupp Tea Bar
The cause of many bubble tea addictions, with addicts flocking to Quakers Friars for their hit of tapioca pearls. Currently on a break for van refurbishments and planning their next project.

5) Wooly Cactus (below)
Serving Tex-Mex food from the corner of Victoria Street and Bath Street near Bristol Bridge. Even if you don’t like tacos or quesadillas, you can rub your face on their trailer covered in wool.

You should definitely try the Food Warren outside the KPMG office – amazing homemade, freshly cooked scotch eggs on a Wednesday and beautiful fresh lunches every weekday. And I have to confess that, after being a faithful Falafel King fan, the new falafel place in St Nicks (still kind of street food…?) is now my chickpea of choice…
