Workhouse Cafe

Trend spotting is all the rage this time of year. Even Bristol City Council director of communications Peter Holt is getting in the swing of things, declaring in his blog that barley is the new couscous and “elderflower will go from strength to strength” in 2013.

If there is one cafe trend that I have spotted recently, it’s putting sugar in old tins of Lyle’s Golden Syrup or Black Treacle, seen in Bristol’s Spicer+Cole, several London cafes and most recently in Workhouse Cafe on Perry Road.

Workhouse Cafe also has a trend of its own which might not catch on; hiding its name from the outside where there is only the word ‘cafe’ painted on one of the windows, with its moniker only known from its menus.

This cafe, formally Delight, is famous for the black and white tiles on the side nearest St Michael’s Hill which form the geometrical optical illusion known as the cafe wall illusion.

As a cafe, Workhouse is now a strong advocate of local and seasonal produce, with much of this grown on their own allotments.

Enjoy a good coffee as well, and if you must have sugar, at least it will come from a bang on-trend receptacle.
