The streets of Bristol double for Victorian London today in the Doctor Who Christmas special on BBC One at 5.15pm. The setting for The Snowmen is Christmas Eve 1892, as the Doctor lives in isolation, mourning the loss of his previous companion Amy Pond.
Much of the episode was filmed in the city, with Corn Street and the area around St Nick’s Market getting a wintry makeover in August (read more here), before filming moved to Portland Square.
The Exchange building can clearly be seen in this trailer for today’s episode as a horse and carriage pull up outside as snow is falling.
There will be a new companion, Clara, played by Jenna-Louise Coleman, a new Tardis, a new monster, and a revamped theme tune and title sequence.
Written by Sherlock scribe Steven Moffat and directed by Saul Metzstein, the story involves killer snowmen, with a guest appearance from Richard E Grant as the evil Dr Simeon.
