The Relaxation Centre

It is early Saturday afternoon and the dappled autumn sun is shining on the outdoor hot tub at the Relaxation Centre in Clifton. Shining on the bubbles, shining on me, and shining on the very cold plunge pool which two other guests convinced me to try out after they both went in for 20 seconds each.

For the sun to light up the water is not just a feat of British weather in November, but also a challenge for the rays as they battle the miniature rainforest in this secret garden and courtyard, just a few hundred yards from the hubbub of Whiteladies Road.

I spent more than an hour out there, in the tub, being pummelled as I did my best to relax.

Earlier, on arrival, I had been shown around the building which includes a lounge with kitchenette, the indoor spa, extra cold shower and saunas.

The tour continued outside before I was given a white robe and fluffy towels.

My host spoke in a lowered voice and was calm and gentle. There is a sign by the indoor spa saying don’t be offended if we ask you to be quiet.

For the most part there was plenty of quiet. The decor is earthen-style with wooden seats and tiles in the spa areas and an environment full of plants, while incense sticks released sandalwood scents.

I didn’t think to take a book but it would have been a great idea as there is plenty of space indoors and out to just sit.

Not having experienced this kind of relaxation before I booked a deep tissue massage treatment. My one-hour session lasted for nearly two and my body was so impressed that I rebooked for the end of the year.

There was steam and there were bubbles and places to lounge and jet streams strong enough to get rid of muscle aches acquired over weeks and months.

In the indoor spa room there is a blackboard which recommends the latest special of a super-food salad. When I checked the menu in the kitchenette, you could order food from toast to salads and coffees and teas.

To my disappointment, the only item free of charge was the week’s chosen complimentary tea, lemon and ginger, unlike the Lido which presents you with any Lahloo tea of your choice after a session. Water was, however, freely available.

This being BS8, relaxation does not come cheap, with prices from £20 to £31 for the spa facilities, and treatments from £30 to £90. But not being able to afford to go on a weekly or even monthly basis is the only downside to this rather wonderful experience.
