An intriguing new cafe is now open behind the Council House. Siam Angel Cafe is a combination of traditional cafe, well a traditional cafe nowadays where a panini is more likely to be ordered than a bacon buttie, and a Thai restaurant, opened by two friends who have moved to Bristol from Birmingham.
Siam Angel Cafe, next door to the Horse and Groom pub on St George’s Road, is also in an intriguing building, with a clue to its history in a small sign above its front door: ‘Lime Kiln Cottage, 1775′.
I visited for a coffee and cupcake last week a few days after the new cafe had opened for the first time.
The cupcake was tasty, but the coffee was a big disappointment, the cappuccino I ordered coming straight out of a machine.
This poor coffee was a shame, as a lot of care and attention has been put into the interior decoration, with a fluffy purple carpet in one corner which my seven-month-old daughter enjoyed exploring, and expensive-looking wallpaper and mirrors.
The Thai menu is expansive – starters such as prawn rolls and soups for £2.99, and mains such as chicken green curry and pad Thai for £4.99 – so the lack of attention to a nice cup of coffee in what is in essence still a cafe, is very surprising.
