Carters Steam Fair

An old-fashioned treat is currently welcoming visitors to the area around Millennium Square with the arrival of Carters Steam Fair, which will be on the Harbourside, Anchor Square and Waterfront Square until January 4. Find your way by the lights and sounds, and the smell of the steam.

Carters Steam Fair is made up of historic family fairground rides including dodgems, gallopers and a helter skelter as well as three children’s rides, trains, cars and dobbies. There is also a brilliant penny arcade featuring some beautifully-preserved machines.

The fair is based in Berkshire and aims to preserve the heritage of the British fair with vintage rides, traditional showmens’ living vans and period transport. The rides date from 1895 to the 1960s and everything is restored, decorated and illustrated in its period: from Edwardian baroque, through art deco to the 1950s and 60s.

Carters Steam Fair will be open from midday until 6.30pm Monday to Thursday and later on Fridays and weekends. Prices are £1 or £2 per ride or attraction.

We popped by today and it was very quiet. My little one thoroughly enjoyed a ride on the wee carousel. We’ll go again!
