The Coffee Lounge

Clifton Village is a world apart from any other area of Bristol. And if one road were to sum Clifton Village up, it would be The Mall, starting with the pub of the same name and meandering down past no less than six jewellery shops before its junction with Princess Victoria Street.

The newest cafe in Clifton Village opened on The Mall earlier this month at the top end of the road next to the Royal Oak in what used to be Bahoo, a children’s shoe shop and the kind of high-end specialist store which Clifton Village has in abundance.

There was a remarkable three members of staff squeezed in behind the counter of The Coffee Lounge when I visited on a grey Friday afternoon, being overseen by their boss who was very keen they make a good impression on new customers.

The interior of The Coffee Lounge is an intriguing contrast of old and new. A huge antique gold-framed mirror from next-door neighbour Jack & Mack hangs above modern tables and chairs, with the two-levelled room in a baby blue colour theme lit by spot lights on the ceiling.

A steady stream of Bristol’s ladies who lunch walked in to the cafe while I was there, making the ‘weekend starts here’ tunes playing on Heart FM seem like a bizarre choice of music.

I had actually only visited The Coffee Lounge out of curiosity, originally intending to get a mocha fix at MeMe Chocolat over the road.

Having set out from home especially in order to drink one, my mocha in The Coffee Lounge was disappointing, with anĀ unappetising gloop of chocolate sticking to the bottom of the cup and spoiling the last few sips, something that would never happen in MeMe Chocolat.

Choice of music and disappointing mocha apart, however, The Coffee Lounge is a pleasant and popular new cafe, very much geared to its Clifton Village clientele.
