The Westbury Park Tavern

Three things about the Westbury Park Tavern make it a pub of note. One, it is situated conveniently opposite the Orpheus cinema, making it ideal for a pre-film drink. Two, it is round; how many other pubs can claim that? And three, it is a place of pilgrimage for Young Ones fans, being the Kebab and Calculator in a first season episode.

The Westbury Park Tavern was until recently The Cock O’ the North. It had a big refit when the name changed, and is now of a standard design, very unexciting, but still with its unique circular bar.

So let’s stick to The Young Ones theme. Here are Rick, Vyvyan, Neil and Mike leaving their house – 25 Broadway Road, Bishopston, on the corner of Codrington Road - and heading off to the Kebab and Calculator for a drink, as Madness entertain the locals. Fast forward to 2.23 for the best exterior shot of the pub:

The zebra crossing they walk across in the above video (0.36) is on Coldharbour Road, while other locations are filmed across Bristol: Footlights College is Ashton Court Mansion; and the police station, Army careers office, launderette and Fascist Pig Bank are all on the Gloucester Road. The OK Chemist is at 172 St John’s Lane in Bedminster. Thanks to Floyd Nello for all that information.

Over 50? Join the Westbury Park Tavern’s Diamond Club and get 25 per cent off your main meal Monday to Friday. Other attractions include a pool table and 3D sport shown when available. But it’s this pub’s connection to The Young Ones which really make it a pub of note.
