Revival Cafe is one of the best cafes in Bristol city centre. If you don’t just want our word for it, ask Steve Morris, the manager of the cafe’s next door neighbour St Nic’s Market who was holding an informal meeting in a corner of the first floor room when we visited on a weekday morning last week.

The cafe is situated in a splendid old building and spread over its entire three floors. The ground floor is for popping in and out, or sitting outside of; the first floor is more relaxed; and upstairs on the third floor is an intimate lounge area that like the first floor can be hired for private functions.

I had my coffee on the first floor, with a great view of the intricate stonework on the Lloyds TSB building across the road not seen from street level. Massive Attack was on the strero as two fans spun noiselessly above. There are some battered tables and chairs and corner seating with cushions. White fairy lights are draped across the room, and a big plant sits in one of the large windows.

A note from owners Mike and Jo on the menu informs customers that most of the food – which includes grilled flatbread wraps and jumbo bagels – is made fresh on the premises and sourced from local suppliers where possible. They also proudly state that they are not part of any chain.

Although situated in a historic building, Revival Cafe at first glance, and only judging by its ground floor appearance, seems like any above average cafe. But wander in, take a look upstairs, have a little explore and you will find that it really is a very special place.
