Café on the Square

Queen Square in the morning can be a beautiful yet dangerous place. It is a gorgeous part of the city, but you have to have precisely eight eyes to navigate the cyclists and pedestrians criss-crossing the square from all angles as they hurry to work.

At any time of the day, but especially in the morning when you are in a rush, it is easy to walk or cycle through Queen Square at some pace, not appreciating the surroundings or realising some of the delights just around the corner.

One of these delights is Café on the Square which I quickly visited after dropping my bike off for a service at Mud Dock. There was no time to sit down, but just enough time to spy the carrot cake, rocky road and caramel slices behind the bar, all looking absolutely delicious, but not what I normally eat first thing.

The takeaway latte (£1.90), however, was just what I needed and gave me the presence of mind to navigate my way back through Queen Square and on to work.

Café on the Square, Grove Avenue (between Queen Square and The Grove). 925 0435.

I passed by Queen Square and the cafe today and all I could think was ‘eight eyes’. Too true.
