Many people have thought about it, but Gerry Cottle literally ran away to join the circus more than 50 years’ ago. His latest show, Turbo Circus, not only blends traditional and modern circus but also features three of his grandchildren, following in what is now very much the family business.
Other performers in this last show at Creative Common in its current season are pupils from the Wookey Hole Circus School, performing everything from aerial silks to balancing half a dozen of their number on bicycles.
Then there is an African dance and gymnastic troupe, who among other tricks perform the lowest limbo you will ever see, adding fire to the mix for extra affect:
In a similar vein, there weren’t just unicycles but unicycles with their seats 20-feet off the ground. A motorbike doesn’t just do a wheelie, it does a wheelie on a high wire rope. And why have just one person spinning around in the air when you can have four?
The whole thing is held together admirably by the clown Bippo, with the 50 acts in 100 minutes flying by in a blink-and-you-miss-it spectacle.
Gerry Cottle’s Turbo Circus is at Creative Common until January 5. Visit www.turbocircus.co.uk.
