Pub of the week: The Rope Walk

The reopening of the Rope Walk at the end of East Street in Bedminster comes at a time when Bottelino’s just down the road has lost faith in the area and moved to Clifton.

Faith, however, should be shown in this part of town and the new owners of the Rope Walk have a lot of that.

There certainly was no Japanese music on the stereo in this pub’s previous incarnations.

But some of its history remains, including an outside seating area in a covered outside courtyard that once upon a time was presumably where horses were led and tethered.

The one ale on tap when I visited was Young’s Bitter, alongside ciders Stowford Press and Aspall’s.

The food offering is ambitious, with an eyewatering £48 whole chicken, said to be big enough for four and carved at the table, and more usual options including pies which are currently chicken and leak or pumpkin.

There is regular live music as well as quizzes in a pub still finding its feet but with some faith could be a successful new opening.

I live nearby so I’ve been in a couple times since they opened. The ales and food are a tad steep for the area, but the atmosphere’s great and I love the live music. Definitely a pub I’ll keep visiting for the odd pint and a listen to some good music, but I doubt there’ll be many long drinking sessions or dinners. :)
