Christmas shows in Bristol this year involve mermaids, sailors and lions.

But the best one of the lot involves super heroes, crocodiles, giant robots and a furry blue bad guy.

Super Sam and Mega Max Christmas tree

Super Sam & Mega Max Save Christmas is an adventure of two flatmates, both professional lollipop men, who are also both secret super heroes, called into action when a mysterious thief steals all of the stars from Christmas trees across the world.

Their job is to find the baddie and retrieve the stars, along the way encountering a variety of obstacles from molten lava to a teddy bear riding a monster truck.

This show is the first aimed at children from the Rannel Theatre Company, the creative partnership of Matt Bailey (Sam) and Joey D (Max), who here combine traditional storytelling with rap and street dance.

Directed by Emma Williams and written by Mike Akers, reunited after last year’s The Lost Present, Super Sam & Mega Max also has original music from Bristol Old Vic stalwart Benji Bower.

It’s an unconventional Christmas treat but an absolute joy.
