A Harris hawk’s happy ending

A five-month-old hawk has been reunited with her owner in Bristol after a Twitter appeal.

Harris hawk Sahara escaped from her owner James Golledge while he was training her in Stapleton on Sunday and was found yesterday by staff at Wessex Garages on Pennywell Road in Easton.

When approached, the bird flew up into a tree.

It was then that Lizzie Bennett from Wessex Garages asked Bristol Culture on Twitter for help.

Our tweet was subsequently retweeted more than 60 times and was seen by James’ uncle Paul, who contacted his nephew.

It was too late to recapture Sahara last night, but this morning James managed to coax her down from a tree with some food, put her into her travel case and take her home.

James said: “Sahara went missing on Sunday from a Scout hut in Stapleton when the line I was using broke and I’ve been very worried ever since.

“It’s marvellous she has turned up safe and well and I’d like to thank everyone involved for helping reunite us.”
