A new magazine has launched in Bristol at the same time as a new collective of independent magazine publishers has formed.
The first issue of Bristol Woman features singer Makala Cheung on the cover, and inside includes articles on domestic violence, the scarcity of women in comedy and encouraging more women into politics.
“The magazine came to light because a group of enthusiastic women wanted a glossy that better reflects their lives – the lives of ordinary women,” goes their mission statement.
The editorial says: “As a local group of women, Bristol Woman is our chance to balance the under-represented views and perspectives of women. This way we ensure diversity from typical mainstream publications and highlight issues that are important to us!”
Bristol Woman is just the latest example of a print publication in the city, many of which have now come together under the umbrella group Bristol Independent Publishers (BIP).
“We’ve grouped together to help showcase the wonderful things happening in Bristol publishing, and to prove that some of the best UK magazines aren’t coming out of muilti-national print houses – but small studios, back rooms and coffee shops,” say the people behind BIP.
Some of these people include splendid Bristol publications Another Escape, Boneshaker, Crack, Lionheart, Loaf, Off Life and Paper.
