Preview: White Christmas, Bristol Hippodrome

Bristol Light Opera Club present White Christmas on the Bristol Hippodrome stage today for the first time as part of their 80th anniversary year.

Running until Saturday, Bloc’s production of Irving Berlin’s musical will feature an amateur cast of more than 50 accompanied by a live orchestra for songs such as the Bing Crosby classic from the 1954 film of the same time.

Bloc chairman Susanne Donovan said: “This year is Blocs’s 80th anniversary and we wanted to honour this milestone with a truly magical and spectacular musical.

“This is the first time White Christmas has been to the Hippodrome stage and it promises to be a fun-filled show leaving the audiences singing all the way home.”

Attendant is one of my favourite London cafes. I'd love to see something similar (and with similar quality coffee) in Bristol. I'll try to check out Cafe on the Square and the Downs Tea Rooms when I'm next in Bristol! Brian.

Good point, Martin. As well as reviewing Cafe on The Square in Shirehampton, I recently visited The Attendant in Fitzrovia and it's a remarkable transformation (the coffee was fantastic, too). As well as Prince Street, perhaps the disused Victorian toilets on the junction of Park Row and Woodland Road could also be turned into a cafe. It's a wonderful building and one currently being used for an exhibition.

I welcome your new cafe/coffee shop in Clifton, Bristol, as it excels all the others in Clifton in terms of table availability, cleanliness, staff intelligence, service and coffee quality. It clearly has good management. However, there is one aspect which I think is appalling and which spoils it for me and my wife and, I believe, many others. This is the fact that all the food there is exposed to the coughs, sneezes and spittle of all your customers as they queue up at the counter for service. I find this hard to understand in this day and age - all other coffee shops/cafes in Clifton display their foodstuffs in glass display units where they are protected from airborne infections. There may be a lot of customers who do not mind or mention this, but this can only be due to their ignorance of basic hygiene and infection routes. I feel you should not be taking advantage of this but should be setting an example relevant to standards of hygiene in the 21st Century. While I go into this cafe for a coffee, I shall never buy food there.
