My Bristol favourites: Tim Popple

Tim Popple is one of the founders of Bristol Bad Film Club, dedicated to screening some of the most awful films ever put to celluloid.

The club’s next event takes place on November 21, when Starcrash, an Italian-produced Star Wars rip-off starring David Hasselhoff, is shown in At-Bristol’s planetarium.

When he is not watching films, Tim is Bristol Cathedral’s music administrator and also an alto lay clerk in the Cathedral Choir.

Here are Tim’s top-five Bristol favourites:

Cinemas
“Coming from small cities and small towns, when I moved to Bristol the first thing that struck me was the vast choice of cinemas at one’s disposal. For a cinematic omnivore, who is as happy watching the latest blockbuster as the newest indie foreign language drama, Bristol caters to my every taste. The Watershed, the Arnolfini, the Cube, the Odeon, The Showcase De Lux, Cineworld – there is such wealth of variety, we’re truly spoiled for choice.”

Festivals
“I think there was a weekend once when Bristol didn’t have a festival happening, but that might have been a myth. There is always, it seems, something going on in Bristol, and I love that. Favourites include the Slapstick Festival, Encounters, Grillstock, Harbourside, and of course the Balloon Fiesta. Anyone who is bored in Bristol is doing Bristol wrong.”

The Hare
“As a resident of Southville it’s a real treat to have a pub like The Hare on my doorstep. Its selection of ales is, for a northerner living in the south, essential, and the friendly, intimate atmosphere is a refreshing antidote to larger chains.”

Ashton Court
“While it’s the Balloon Fiesta that brings vast numbers to Ashton Court, it’s taking a quiet walk around the grounds on a quiet evening which makes me so fond of this space. It’s a large enough area to be distinct from the surrounding bustling city, but near enough to be convenient. It’s a place to unplug and regenerate from the thriving, busy city that is Bristol.”

Bristol Cathedral
“Even were I not to have a connection to the Cathedral, this would be on my list, as there is something quietly majestic about cathedrals. Nestled onto College Green, Bristol Cathedral is unusual among British cathedrals in that it is not set high on a hill, visible from afar. Instead it remains a surprisingly well-hidden treasure, for a building so large. With its mediaeval painted chapel, and Victorian west end towers, it’s a building that has a fascinating history, and for a peaceful moment amidst a busy working day in the city centre, is unbeatable.”
