My Bristol favourites: Laura Hart

Laura Hart is the owner of Hart’s Bakery, hidden underneath the approach road to Temple Meads, which since moving from its original home on Hampton Lane in Cotham last year has become one of the most popular places for discerning Bristol foodies.

Laura was previously the in-house baker at the Lido in Clifton. She was inspired to set up business on her own after the success of a bike stall at the 2010 Bristol Cycle Festival.

Here are Laura’s top-five Bristol favourites:

Full Court Press
“A Sunday morning jaunt into town has become a bit of a habit, partly because I need to go the bakery to feed our sourdough culture. A coffee at Full Court Press on Broad Street in the Old City is a real treat as I rarely get chance to sit down and savour a coffee during the week. Mat and the team are really knowledgeable and I nearly always bump into someone I know, which is nice!”

Easton
“I regularly head over to Easton on my way home to pick up ingredients from the many excellent shops selling a range of Indian spices and groceries – one of my favourite cuisines. It’s also nice to pop into the East Bristol Bakery for a catch up with Alex to talk bread and the ups and downs of running a bakery.”

The view from St Michael’s Hill
“The panorama across Bristol on the way down St Michael’s Hill is one of my favourite views in the city. I get to enjoy it every morning on the way back from my delivery run. The traffic is usually pretty slow at that time of day so I get plenty of time to take in the mix of buildings, people and on a very special day a sky full of balloons.”

The walk from Temple Quay to Castle Park
“After a hectic Saturday morning bake, I usually try and escape for a couple of hours in the afternoon. There’s a lovely walk from Temple Quay along the Floating Harbour into Castle Park which really feels like a hidden part of Bristol, and it’s only since opening the bakery nearby that I’ve discovered this area. A 15-minute stroll can take you right into the foodie hub of St Nick’s Market for some lunch, or some ingredients for dinner from Source.”

Cycling
“I don’t get out on my bike as much these days as much as I’d like to, but a favourite day-off activity is taking Betty (my old shopping bike) for a pedal around Bristol, trying to discover bits I haven’t found yet. I always end up feeling that the city is suddenly much smaller and more accessible and it’s lovely to slow down a bit – bakery life in pretty full on!”
