Pub of the week: Horts

A cinema in a pub, that’s the new USP of Horts on Broad Street which has recently reopened after a major refurbishment.

The 26-seat cinema, branded as Director’s Cut, is located at the rear of the pub and shows films on a loop for one week. Currently it’s The Great Gatsby, with Lincoln starting on Friday.

It’s certainly an unusual proposition, and one that could well be used by companies wishing to host private screenings. It will also be a great place to watch live sport.

Horts is named after 18th century artist, essayist and bon viveur Arthur Hort, born on Broad Street.

The refurb further roots this pub in Bristol, especially an eye-catching wall display by the front door, a detailed map of the city from 1930 on which are framed black and white photos on artful slants, and a few Banksy stencils.

Being a Young’s pub, the Wandsworth brewery’s beers dominate the draft options, which is no bad thing when you have the likes of London Gold, Special and Double Chocolate Stout.

Other beer options include Gem, Bombardier and the little seen Meantime Pale Ale and Yakima Red, with Thatcher’s Gold and Aspall’s the ciders.

There is plenty of food here too, from pizzas and burgers to classic pub fare of bangers and mash and fish and chips.
