Historic Stapleton house for sale

A seventeenth century former court in Stapleton where Oliver Cromwell and General Sir Thomas Fairfax are believed to have held council in 1645 before their march to Bristol during the English Civil War, is for sale.

The Parliamentarians encircled the city while a naval squadron in the Bristol Channel blockaded the Royalists by sea. After a week-long siege, infantry stormed the defences, with a particularly ferocious battle at Prior’s Hill Fort (now covered by Fremantle Square in Kingsdown) before Bristol Castle was the only strongpoint of the Royalist forces, who soon surrendered.

The main house, in its own private cul-de-sac, has six bedrooms, two bathrooms and three reception rooms, and also comes with an attached independent one-bedroom annexe.

The house is listed as are its walled grounds of some three-quarters of an acre, surrounded by woodland.
