A collaboration between Theatre Damfino, one of Bristol’s finest theatre companies, and Flinty Red, one of Bristol’s finest restaurants, was always going to be memorable.
The Table of Delights in the studio of the Old Vic was certainly that.
This was a theatre performance that was more surreal dining experience than theatre, yet the food – good as it was – would not have been so noteworthy if it were not for the theatrical and musical elements.
Theatre Damfino have form in unusual partnerships, with surgeons and street artists as previous collaborators.
Yet nothing before has quite been like this, with a maitre d’s head served on a silver platter, eggs fired from canons, two beetroot lovers parted and reunited before being sadly turned into beetroot puree with dill, music from the incomparable Bower Brothers, spice tasting, honey pouring, dry ice ice cream making and a sultry songstress singing on the table.
At the head of the long table, Flinty Red chef Matt Williamson was as much a part of the action as Sturrock (last seen at the Old Vic as Jesus in Messiah) and his waiter cohorts, who might have easily passed for real waiters if not occasionally bursting into song.
Unusual collaborations are nothing new in Bristol, but this is particularly well-worked, entertaining, enlightening and full of fun with the added bonus of a slap-up meal.
Just spare a thought for those sat in the gallery, salivating as those below tuck into a five-course meal with wine.
The Table of Delights is in the Bristol Old Vic Studio until Saturday. Visit www.bristololdvic.org.uk/tableofdelights.html for tickets and more information.
