Pub of the week: The Lodekka

The best thing about the Lodekka, a new pub which opened earlier this month on the Bath Road in Brislington, is its name.

The Hungry Horse pub and restaurant has been built on the site of the former Bristol Motor Constructional Works, where the famous Lodekka buses were built.

There is a bit of history about the site inside, and to continue the theme, when I visited on Saturday afternoon, popular 1970s sitcom ‘On The Buses’ was being projected onto one of the walls.

The Lodekka has opened when pubs in this part of Bristol tend to close, with the Hollybush on the Bath Road replaced by a block of flats and the White Hart on Brislington Hill now a performing arts school.

It has also offered food where for many years the height of culinary sophistication was a trip to the nearby Burger King drive-through.

A Hungry Horse menu has a bewildering array of options, from “smothered chips” to Hawaii Five-O gammon. A 9oz sirloin steak costs £9.99, and there are deals throughout the week including children eating for £1 on Monday and Tuesday, and a curry and a pint for £4.99 on a Wednesday.

Children are well-looked after here, with television screens in the booths showing the CBeebies channel and a playground and grass area to run around in outside.

For adults who still like to play games there is a pool table, with a photograph of Bristol snooker ace Judd Trump on a nearby wall for inspiration.

Strongbow and Thatchers Gold are the ciders on tap, with Brahma an unusual addition among the lagers, and Tribute, Abbot Ale and Greene King IPA the ales.

Continuing the transport theme of the Lodekka’s name, the car park here is so big that there are signs directing you to the pub’s entrance.
