Hungry office workers who eat lunch at their desk rarely venture far for a sandwich. So two new sandwich bars opening this week is a cause for celebration for those able to resist the temptation of a Tesco meal deal.
Sandwich Sandwich has opened on Baldwin Street in what used to be the short-lived Nom Nom, while across the other side of the city centre is Peckish on Union Street.
But how do they compare?
First out of the blocks was Sandwich Sandwich:
First impressions are good. There is even some real greenery to accompany the green colour scheme, although inside is a bit mixed up; novelty tea cups alongside faux antique wooden signs.
This place is about sandwiches though, and they are not cheap. The rare roast beef or poached salmon “house” sandwiches cost £4.25.
There are also flatbreads, homemade savouries such as scotch eggs and a salad cart, as well as tempting slices of cake.
My own choice of sandwich was the coronation chicken, mint yoghurt and mango chutney (£3.75). The only downside of such a hefty filling was the limp sliced white bread it was served in, which made the sandwich collapse in on itself like a sink hole.
Peckish is an altogether smaller proposition but it also has some outside seating, currently overlooking roadworks:
Peckish also has the misfortune to have opened in a corner of Broadmead which has recently been highlighted as ripe for demolition.
That won’t happen immediately, however, so until it does, enjoy the sandwiches here.
Most are around the £3 mark but even the “Full Monty” is only £3.50, an absolute whopper containing roast chicken, cumberland sausage, bacon, cheese and tomato chutney.
For breakfast, it’s the obligatory bacon, sausage or egg sandwich, while there is also the choice of porridge with a choice of two toppings for £1.20.
I popped in yesterday afternoon for an almond Danish pastry (£1.20), which I can highly recommend to anyone with a sweet tooth.
Let the battle for Bristol’s best sandwich continue.
Hello!
Thank you very much. I work at Peckish and I served you said Danish. Just a little point, our porridge is £1.20 not £2.10!
Sarah (with the pink hair)
Hi Sarah – thanks for letting me know and thanks for the Danish! I have swapped around the numbers on the erroneously priced porridge.
Many Thanks!!
