Joe’s Coffee

Jack FM was playing on the radio when I visited Joe’s Coffee earlier this week. Co-owner Ricki Lee used to be programme director there and one former colleague, breakfast show presenter Ian Downs, has already declared on Twitter that it’s his “new favourite coffee place in Bristol”.

A pet hate of mine in cafes is the loud hum of fridges, and the noise here means that I cannot share Downsy’s view.

And neither does it make the best coffee. In my humble opinion, Full Court Press on Broad Street wins that particularly accolade, closely followed by Small Street Espresso.

The flat white that I was served in Joe’s Coffee didn’t quite have the kick expected and neither did it have the thick consistency that a flat white should have.

The yoghurt-coated flapjack, however, certainly won the approval of my two-year-old daughter, who gleefully wolfed it down and also most of my chocolate brownie, made by Cocoa Squared from Totterdown.

Curiously, although its address is on Whiteladies Road, Joe’s Coffee actually has its front door on West Park in what used to be two businesses, a sandwich shop and a barbers.

Now with a partition wall removed, the new cafe still has the wide double door and is flooded in natural light even on a drizzly Wednesday morning.

Two maroon Chesterfield seats in the window are the pick of the seating options, with the other chairs looking like they have been taken from a classroom.

Trade here may well mean nearby office workers rushing in for a lunchtime sandwich to take away, and they are well served with options including egg mayo and chorizo, ham salad and BLT.

The coffee is from Extract and Clifton Coffee Company, with tea from Canton Tea and smoothies and hot chocolate also served.
