Pub of the week: The Eastfield Inn

There are three clocks above the bar at the Eastfield Inn, showing three different times in a pub almost caught between three different areas of Bristol: Henleaze, Westbury-on-Trym and Southmead.

Once upon time, Bristol did have its own time, about 10 minutes behind London. A reminder of this is on the clock face of the Exchange on Corn Street, which has two minute hands.

But back to the Eastfield, an imposing pub on Henleaze Road whose recent refurbishment has meant the sprucing up of a pub that was looking a little rough around the edges.

The leading on the windows remain, but much of the pub now has a bright and modern feel, red the prominent colour painted on many of the walls and also much of the upholstery.

Disappointingly, only three of the possible six real ale hand pumps were on when I visited on Monday afternoon. These were  Eastfield Ale (a pale ale brewed especially for the pub), Golden XPA and Butcombe.

There was also Murphy’s stout, with Simmond’s the cider on tap alongside wines that merit their own wine list.

Food is an important part of the pub’s new offer, with jerk chicken the special on Monday and a selection of puddings made by Absolutely Cakes.

Thursday is steak night, Monday is quiz night, while a drop-down screen shows live sport.

With the three clocks above the bar, you might not know what time it is, but if you’re local to the Eastfield it’s probably time for a visit.
