If it’s comedy and it’s happening in Bristol, the chances are that Mark Olver – taking part in Bristol Comedy Garden on Queen Square between July 3 and 6 – is behind it.
“So, I have decided to deliberately leave out any comedy nights, and Miss Millie’s fried chicken,” he says.
“Anyone who might know me will know that comedy and chicken are important parts of my life, so I am going off piste.”
Here are Mark’s top-five Bristol favourites:
Arnos Vale Cemetery
“One of the most amazing places in Bristol. Lovely cafe and incredible walks. The story behind how the cemetery was saved by volunteers is incredible. I tend to use it to walk from Brislington up to Totterdown, but the Atrium Cafe is a great place to sit and write, and they also do cinema nights and theatre.”
The cheesy chips at the Hope and Anchor, Jacob’s Wells Road
“Go large. Just the right side of melted cheese on a massive portion of chips.”
Book Barn
“Ok, so it isn’t strictly Bristol, but the Book Barn near Farringtom Gurney does have a BS postcode. It has a massive, ridiculous collection of books, most for just a quid each. The filing system is a nightmare, but they have a selection of rarer books that can be found by the staff.”
Sunday roast at the Landsdown
“I have done my research, and although I enjoy a carvery at Ronnie’s in Thornbury, the Rummer Tavern, Victoria Park, The Kensington and various others, the Lansdown is the one. Best Sunday roast in Bristol.”
Robert Mills Architectural Antiques (below)
“This is the best one. My favourite place in Bristol. Got Bristol written all over it. Odd, impressive, hidden and surprising. Robert Mills is hidden down near Tesco Eastville, near the massive Chinese restaurant. They sell lots of old furniture, but that makes it sound like a fairly standard vintage furniture outlet. It is the only place in Bristol you can buy an entire Victorian bar, or 20 foot stained window, or a 1920s medical display case. And that is just the half of it. It will blow your mind.”
