From the team behind the Eat Drink Bristol Fashion tipis on the grass of Queen Square comes a new cafe in a yurt on concrete behind Bristol Temple Meads.
As well as having the best name for a new Bristol food business since Bristanbul on the Gloucester Road, Yurt Lush next to the big top and The Goods Yard at Creative Common, also serves great food and drink.
With a bar, kitchen and seating for up to 70 people, Yurt Lush’s menu has been devised by Josh Eggleton, owner and head chef of the Michelin-starred Pony & Trap in Chew Magna.
Eggleton was in the kitchen early on Tuesday morning when I visited, but the first I saw of him in his grey Yurt Lush-branded t-shirt was unfortunately having to pass on his apologies to one customer for the marmalade not yet being ready.
Open weekdays from 7.30am until 4.30pm, breakfast and brunch include everything from seeded sourdough toast with Marmite Butter (£1.50) to a full English (£7.95).
My smoked bacon sandwich on white sourdough (£3.50) was among the best I have had in Bristol, running a close second to Poco.
The lunch menu includes chicken and burgers from the Story organic farm near Wrington, with platter boards featuring cured meats from Castellano’s in Fishponds, “jar noodles”, salads, sandwiches and cakes.
Coffee is from Brian Wogan, with Amstel, Butcombe Blonde and Ashton Press on tap.
In a temporary building with a high skylight, the number of power sockets in the interconnected yurts are a pleasant surprise.
Over the next few months there will be evening and weekend events including one of the Story Organic Sunday lunches.
