Review: Bianco, Creative Common

Creative Common, or what used to be a car park behind Temple Meads, has begun its second year in Bristol with a circus show in a big top which looks like a giant silver jellyfish surrounded by giant red tulips.

Next to the big top there is also a bar in shipping containers called The Goods Yard and a cafe not yet open called Yurt Lush.

Bianco from Cardiff’s No Fit State Circus is the launch show at Creative Common this time around – from a company who haven’t performed in Bristol for more than 20 years. And it’s been well worth the wait.

Barely had a lady in a red dress walked across a tightrope in high heels than another performer swooped over our head held aloft by two pieces of cloth in the closest approximation to flying I have ever seen.

Soundtracked by a live band, the company kept very busy, manoevering both the stage and the audience around, so the person who one minute is telling you to watch your back is the next minute juggling balls as if they were attached to his hands by pieces of string, or trampolining as if in reverse, or becoming a human snowdome right above our heads.

There’s barely time to pause for breath. And it’s absolutely mesmerising.
