Once on the very outskirts of Bristol, the Miners Arms in Bedminster Down has now been swallowed up by the expanding city – but the name of the pub gives a clue to a former industry in these parts.
Horse brass decorates the fireplace – above which is a flatscreen television showing live sport – in the half of the pub where live bands play every Sunday night and there is also a dartboard.
Across the other side of the pub is a pool table in a room decorated with signed football shirts.
Courage Best and Doom Bar were the ales on tap when I visited over the Bank Holiday weekend, with both Thatchers Gold and traditional on tap, and the surprising sight among the bottles of Spanish favourite Mahou.
For the traditionalists there are pickled eggs behind the bar, or there is the £5 curry night every Thursday.
