Against conventional wisdom, one new Bristol councillor is advocating for more supermarkets to be built.

Tory Avonmouth councillor Wayne Harvey wants more supermarkets in Lawrence Weston, Shirehampton and Sea Mills, and wants one to be built on the empty former Bristol Composite Materials factory site 16.9-acre plot in Atlantic Road.

Speaking to the Bristol Post, Harvey said: “The absence of supermarket alternatives in my ward is really unacceptable.

“This neglect was a big issue on the doorstep throughout the recent local elections campaign and I promised to do everything in my power to try to get something done about it.”

He added: “I know some criticise the market dominance of the big four supermarkets. But the critics should try living without easy access to these chains for their weekly main shop.

“It can be very difficult and expensive. The people I represent deserve to be treated better than this.”
