Winston Churchill playing the ukulele on his death bed in heaven’s waiting room while cursing at Adolf Hitler sitting on the chair beside him awaiting his passage to hell. It’s what they both would have wanted.
This is not even the most surreal moment in a very funny new comedy written and performed by Stu Mcloughlin and Howard Coggins, which also sees Union Jack Speedos and a singing dog.
Performed in the confines of the Bristol Old Vic basement, better known in recent years as the Blind Tiger speakeasy during Mayfest and Ferment, Adolf & Winston is brilliantly bonkers, with an inspired 15-minute musical race through the history of the Second World War.
Out of character on stage, Mcloughlin and Coggins are just as funny as in character, as they lament being in the graveyard slot of 9.30pm and poke fun at their previous historical epic, The Six Wives of Henry VII.
Adolf & Winston is at the Bristol Old Vic until May 11. For more information, visit www.bristololdvic.org.uk/adolf.html.
